Limescale and Calgon
There are few facts in life that we can be certain on. There is always conflicting “evidence” to weigh up. Today I would like to talk about two facts:
- Limescale costs you money every time you heat water
- Calgon costs you money every time you use the washing machine!

Why does it cost more to heat water through limescale?
Limescale effectively insulates the heating element from heating the water. The element then compensates by heating up even more. This causes the heat exchanger to fail due to overheating.
How much more does it cost to heat water through limescale?
This table is a good summary. Those who would like an in-depth scientific report, please email me.
How much does Calgon cost?
This is much easier to calculate. If you use the washing machine 4 times a week, Calgon will cost you £58.24 per year, £291.20 every 5 years and £582.40 every 10 years.
If you use the washing machine 6 times a week, Calgon will cost you £87.36 per year, £436.80 every 5 years and £873.60 every 10 years.
Based on buying a large 45-pack of Calgon at £10.25.
HOW MUCH?!
But there is an alternative to Calgon
Aquabion introduces the new Mini Aquabion for washing machines. These cost the same as using Calgon for 1–2 years and last for 5 years, protecting the washing machine as well as reducing the use of detergents. They can be installed in 10 minutes and simply screw on between the hose and valve. There is no better alternative to Calgon.
Of course, far greater savings can be made if a whole-house device is installed, as every boiler, shower, washing machine and more will be protected.
